Years ago, during a day trip to Kampung Cina in Sitiawan, I had my first dining experience at Restoran Makanan Laut Villa.
My companions and I were looking for a seafood restaurant, but we needed the convenience of online search engines to rely on old-fashioned exploration.
Eventually, we stumbled upon the restaurant located beside some palm oil estates.
We arrived around 2 pm, hungry and eager to sample some of their offerings. I distinctly recall asking for recommendations and wanting to try their crab dishes.
Based on the vast space in front of the establishment and the number of vehicles parked there, Restoran Makanan Laut Villa is a well-known seafood restaurant in the village.
Even though it has been more than a decade since my visit in 2007, I can still recall the distinct sweet and sour flavors of the Foochow delicacies.
Sitiawan is renowned for its rich Foochow culture, evident in the variety of traditional Foochow delicacies served in local restaurants and homes.
These include popular dishes like Red Rice Wine Vermicelli and “Kong Piang.”
Recently, I joined a group of seniors and their friends on a day tour to Restoran Makanan Laut Villa.
The restaurant was almost full when we arrived, but fortunately, our tour leader had made a reservation in advance.
Despite the crowd, we squeezed into three massive tables, each accommodating 12 people.
Restoran Makanan Laut Villa
While no notable decorations exist, the restaurant boasts a semi-al-fresco dining space filled with a bustling crowd and a steady stream of walk-in customers.
When you see this, which is always a promising sign of a delicious meal.
We glanced around the dining area and noticed several tables occupied by regular patrons sipping a local concoction.
It was a mixture of Toddy, a locally produced alcoholic beverage, Guinness Stout, and added ice cubes.
However, given the hot, humid, and hazy weather, most of us were famished and could not fathom drinking in the afternoon heat.
Red Rice Wine Vermicelli
Restoran Makanan Laut Villa has the popular Foochow dish made with red glutinous wine, Mee Sua, and chicken on their menu.
Mee Sua or Misua is a type of wheat vermicelli, which refers to a very thin variety of salted noodles made from wheat flour.
If you’re keen to try it, you can order it.
However, I have read that their version is relatively mild in flavor compared to the thicker homemade versions.
What We Ordered At Restoran Makanan Laut Villa
These are the dishes we tried.
- Signature Tofu
- Kangkong Sambal Belacan
- Sambal Sotong
- Marmite Chicken
- Oh Chien
- Fried Chicken
- Four Heavenly Kings
Four Heavenly Kings
At Restoran Makanan Laut Villa, one of their signature dishes is a massive aluminum bowl filled with seafood in a Thai-style sour and spicy broth.
The dish features an assortment of fresh seafood, such as flower crabs, prawns, fish, and clams, soaked in a clear broth infused with minced garlic, chili, spring onion, and cilantro.
The broth is perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of sourness and spiciness, making it irresistible and leaving us eagerly slurping up every steaming hot spoonful.
The freshness of the seafood is undeniable, making this dish a must-try for seafood lovers.
Oh Chien (Oyster Omelette)
Hey foodies! Are you a fan of crispy textures?
The Oh Chien or oyster omelet in Sitiawan has the ultimate crispiness that lies in frying the egg and starch batter just right.
When you take a bite, you’ll experience a delectable combination of crispy starch bits and plump oysters’ intense and wild flavor that pairs exceptionally well with the delightful crunch.
Trust me; you won’t be able to resist this gastronomic delight!
Restoran Makanan Laut Villa serves a unique and crispy rendition of the classic oyster omelet I had never tried before.
It is undoubtedly a vast improvement over the standard version that often features soft and chewy batter.
This deep-fried egg omelet is studded with many small oysters, making it addictively delicious and perfectly matched with the famous Kampung Koh chili sauce.
However, the omelet was crispier on my first try, and perhaps the addition of plump oysters and a longer wait time caused it to become a bit soggy.
Regardless, it is still a dish worth trying out.
Marmite Chicken
Marmite Chicken features succulent pieces evenly coated with a sticky and sweet sauce.
In summary, we departed the Villa with a fully stuffed belly. The food quality was better than average and reasonably priced as well. If you are in the area, it’s worth stopping by this place.
