8 Must-Try Yoyo Wich Sandwiches

I was looking forward to the Yoyo Wich opening in Penang.

The café started in Simpang Ampat, and I started following them on their IG because I miss Banh mi.

Vietnamese Short Baguette Banh mi

Banh mi is a short baguette in Vietnamese cuisine with a light, crispy, crusty, and soft, airy texture.

Since my first trip to Hanoi, I have loved a good Banh mi.

The petite Baguette is often split lengthwise and filled with savory ingredients you can customize.

It’s like a submarine sandwich served as a meal.

It’s called banh mi thịt.

Plain baguette is also eaten as a staple food, unlike rice or noodles, in Vietnam.

Yoyo Wich calls their interpretation of the French Baguette with fillings an Asian-style sandwich.

If you have been to Vietnam and eaten the real McCoy, and to be fair – there is no comparison at all, and there shouldn’t be one.

Nothing, in my opinion, compares favorably to Bánh Mì Phượng.

As for Vietnamese Bánh Mì, I have had it in every city I’ve visited: Hanoi, Saigon, Danang, Hue, Hoi An.

There is one on a street corner in Saigon with a very decent and delicious oven for freshly baked hot baguettes.

Bánh Mì Phượng ingredients and sauces are amazing.

Bánh Mì Phượng

I remember making a trip to Hoi An with some travel companions.

While they wanted to visit the old city and look forward to buying lanterns and couture outfits (on the cheap), All I wanted to do was head to Bánh Mì Phượng.

Bánh Mì Phượng had *Anthony Bourdain’s Stamp of Approval when the American celebrity chef was in town filming an episode of his travel show, “No Reservations.”

Of course, I followed along nicely and feigned interest as the other women fawned over cheap national traditional dresses in the night markets called the ao dai.

I looked very “interested” in the lanterns, but secretly, I was dying to sink my gnashers into a meal at Bánh Mì Phượng.

As luck would have it, Kelly, our Vietnamese guide, and I stared hard into the night—we had arrived on the one night that Bánh Mì Phượng was closed that year!

Bánh Mì Phượng is the best I’ve tasted.

*in you didn’t know it already, Anthony Bourdain is my hero. I was devastated when he took his own life.

Let’s head back to YoYo Wich before I digress more into Vietnamese cuisine.

What I Ordered For Breakfast At YoYo Wich Paragon

I had the Lemongrass Roast Chicken with Egg Butter and YoYo Wich’s Fried Egg Sandwich because I was so hungry.

YoYo Wich Lemongrass Roast Chicken with Egg Butter (RM 11.90)

The sliced chicken breast is fragrant with aromatic lemongrass, which reminds me of Vietnamese cuisine.

Among my favorites is a good Vietnamese Spicy Lemongrass Chicken (Gà Xào Sả Ớt)

Yoyo Wich’s Lemongrass Roast Chicken is mild (children can eat it), unlike the grilled spicy street food version in good Vietnamese restaurants.

The spread and aromatics in the Bahn mi are homemade egg butter, coriander, scallion, cucumber, fresh chilies, and pickled carrots.

I must say the pickled carrots are sweet, vinegary, and crunchy.

The sandwich is good, but not WOW.

I ordered another sandwich because the portion was only 6″ and small.

The lovely lady serving me recommended cakes and some fried dough balls.

I could eat cake at 10.30 AM so decided to get an Egg filling.

YoYo Wich Fried Egg Sandwich (RM 8.90)

While the Classic Breakfast Banh Mi has double sunny-side eggs with runny yolks and crisp white edges, YoYo Wich’s version uses a fluffy folded omelet.

Cooking in the mall limits grilling and deep-frying, so they could not spoon hot fat over egg tops as they cook until set to the desired consistency.

The spread and aromatics are egg butter, scallion, coriander, cucumber, fresh chilies, homemade tomato sauce, pickled garlic, and carrots.

At YoYo Wich Latte (RM11.90)

The aromatic house coffee is fair, considering they didn’t have a barista that morning.

I would have preferred an iced Vietnamese drip coffee with condensed milk.

Then I reminded myself that I was not anywhere near a Vietnamese café.

YoYo Wich Lemongrass Roast Chicken with Egg Butter (RM 11.90) Latte (RM11.90)

What is the Vietnamese drip coffee called?

Vietnamese iced coffee (Vietnamese: cà phê đá, literally “iced coffee” is a traditional Vietnamese coffee recipe. At its simplest, cà phê đá is made using medium to coarse ground dark roast Vietnamese-grown coffee with a small metal Vietnamese drip filter (phin cà phê).

YoYo Wich Price Point

The 6″ baguette sandwich cost RM11.90

With a Latte, it comes up to RM23.80

For breakfast, it’s not a cheap meal.

Sandwich Prices in Penang

In comparison, you can have a 6” Roast Chicken Subway Sandwich that you can customize for RM12.

If you want a croissant with free-flow coffee, Winter Warmers serves that for RM17.

But then again, I’ve had Avocado toast (2 poached eggs, pureed refrigerated Avocado) and a Latte for RM37.

Running down to Bonjour Garden for a wholemeal Tuna, Egg Mayo, or Ham & Cheese costs me RM6.50.

This brings us back to how much you would pay for sandwiches in the morning.

Would I go to YoYo Wich again?

Yes, If I have another craving for a Vietnamese Baguette.

Perhaps I will buy just the little Baguette for RM4 per loaf and eat that with soup.

I like the airy, crispy texture, which is delicious.

Making a Lemongrass sandwich takes up too much time in the morning, plus I’m not as hot as a cook.

So, in all fairness, I will try Ham and Egg with Mushroom Pate or something with Pate again.

Conclusion

YoYo Wich upholds that no artificial additives like MSG are added to their recipes.

The food is fresh and wholesome, and I will probably drop by for cakes and coffee another day.

All the best to the little sandwich shop.
