Roti Canai Gemas Road Penang The Next Hottest Breakfast Spot

Roti Canai Gemas Road is the busiest roti canai spot. This hidden stall is a local community place near a Malay kampung in Caunter Hall, Penang.

The location of this stall is off the tourist grid, yet, I have meet tourists from Raub, Pahang here. When I asked how they found this stall, they said it’s because they have many viral photos of the food.

What is Roti Canai?

Roti Canai is an Indian-influenced flatbread breakfast staple in Southeast Asia. This popular dish is found in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.

This simple flatbread is made from just two ingredients; unleavened flour and oil. The dough is kneaded by folding to incorporate multiple layers to make a fluffy flaky roti.

The real magic is from the kneading of the dough and in “spinning” it in the air to incorporate air into the dough.

The Roti Canai is cooked with vegetable oil and ghee on a hot griddle.

In Singapore they call this Roti Pratha.

Gemas Road Roti Canai in the early days.

I have been to try the roti in the early days before it became famous. When the stall started it was just a simple neighborhood roti place for a cheap breakfast.

Back in the day a Roti Canai with Dhal Curry and a Kopi is the perfect start to a good day. The little stall has grown and now has many new customers.

Gemas Road Roti Canai is the hottest breakfast spot in Penang.

Not only is the stall famous now, it has overtaken the Transfer Road Roti Canai in George Town as the best in Penang.

According to many, they cited the tasty curries.

I couldn’t agree more. The curries are definitely different with a good combination for the special Roti Canai.

What’s the stall like?

The place is a bit small and narrow and very crowded over the weekends. This place is always full of people.

If you want to eat here, you will need to eat quickly once the food arrives as there are other people waiting by your table.

The best way to get a table is to go alone or with just a friend so you can ask to share table.

Drinks Menu

The popular hot beverage: “Teh tarik” (pulled milk tea) is a perfect accompaniment for the roti canai.
The drinks menu is rather extensive with Teh, Milo, Kopi and Syrup.
The interesting drinks are

  • Asam Ais
  • Nestum Panas
  • Nestum Ais

The menu with the stall’s operating hours.

“Sabar Menanti” means “Please Wait Patiently”

Roti Canai Special

Where other stalls serve a roti Telur with an egg cooked in the roti, Shaikh serves this with a sunny-side-up fried egg. This is topped with, a thin slice of cheese and a handful of chopped raw purple onions. The final serve is flooding or drenching the roti with 3 types of curry sauce: chicken curry, beef curry and dhal curry.

If you are a small eater, a simple roti is more than sufficient.

For big eaters, they will opt for the Special which has extra curried beef, mutton or chicken.

Generally, the food is served sloppily. This is not the place to look for perfect plating.

What’s the taste of the Roti?

The roti is flaky on the outside and soft inside without being too greasy. The serve is served drenched with curry.

The Chicken curry is a bit spicy for me. For chili lovers, this is a mild curry. The taste of the curry is good, especially the Dhall which is thick and delicious.

The best way to eat this is to wait a while so the roti absorbs all the spicy flavors of the Dhall and curry gravy.

I like to break the runny yolk to mix in the gravy and eat the roti combined with the cheese, onion and chicken.

How does this Roti Canai measure up against Transfer Road Roti Canai?

Both have the same variety of curries, a Beef, Chicken and Dhal mix. However taste wise I prefer Gemas Road as its gravy is delicious and spicy.

How to get to Gemas Road?

It’s easier to enter in from Kampar Road. There is a vacant lot where you can park opposite the stall. If you come in from Jalan P Ramlee (Caunter Hall) the road is narrow and one way only. So making a U turn can be tricky if you are using Google Map or Waze when there is lag on you Data.

Review of Gemas Road Roti Canai

The roti is delicious. The only down side is the long wait and slow service. I only manage to park on my third trip to Gemas Road.

I will definitely come back for another roti during weekday mornings.

Have you tried this Roti Canai? What do you think? Is this better than Roti Canai Jalan Argyll?
