David Brown’s Restaurant at Strawberry Hill, Penang Hill
Standing on Strawberry Hill also known as “hill upon a hill”; David Brown’s cottage is refurbished as the highest restaurant in Penang.
David Brown Restaurant offers one of the most spectacular views of George Town at dusk. As the day winds down the city turn into a twinkling fairytale town before your eyes.
The original house of Penang’s pioneer nutmeg planter, David Brown was rebuilt in the 19th century after it was burnt down. It is refurbished and rebranded as a quintessential British colonial Restaurant and Tea Terrace.
For a romantic gateway, spend a day up Penang’s iconic Penang Hill. Take the funicular train up during a weekday, where the pace is slower.
We ordered a refreshing DB Fruit Punch which has a combination of orange, apple, mango, cranberry juice, and grenadine syrup. It was a sweet thirst quenched that refreshes after we walked around the hilltop.

What to Order at David Brown’s Restaurant?
Soup Starters
For starters, we opt to skip appetizers to save room for desserts. That plan was perfect as the portions are not only large but delicious!
We tried two wonderful full-bodied soups, cooked in chicken broth and cream. The cooler climate does make one hungrier than usual. Maybe I was just greedy and finished all my mains.

The Star Dish is Beef Wellington
Beef Wellington is definitely my favorite mains. This is the perfect main course to look forward to for Christmas Day lunch. A tender cut of beef is a little bit of luxury. It comes from the most expensive cut of meat and has no muscle, making it tender and delicious.
If you haven’t had it before, you will be pleasantly surprised. Chef starts by pan searing the fillet steak on a hot pan then coat it with English mustard. Next, the beef is wrapped with a bed of bacon coated with chicken pâté. The final wrap is a homemade puff pastry before it’s oven baked.
The roasted beef fillet is a delicious, succulent. The nice pastry is crispy on the outside. Pate and bacon smell divine and Christmassy. Perfect.

The Classic BBQ Chicken Chop
The Classic BBQ Chicken Chop has a lovely piquant tasty marinate and is served with a BBQ sauce. The chicken is just cooked and retains its juicy flavor, with a nicely barbequed taste. I rather like the crinkle cut potatoes for its crispy crunch. The best part is the potatoes are and still soft and flavourful.

Women Have a Second Stomach for Desserts
We Ordered Two Desserts!
For desserts, we had two cakes. The Pandan Chiffon Cake is light green due to the chlorophyll in the pandan juice. Delicious with local kaya and a butterscotch ice cream. That and a hot cup of cappuccino was the highlight of my Penang Hill trip.
I can’t wait to return to dine at David Brown’s Restaurant & Tea Terraces. I hear that they have a great high tea set. If there are hot freshly made scones and mini pies, I’ll be making a beeline there soon!
