Unboxing Ipoh’s Tastiest Famous Salt Baked Chicken Next Day
One of the things we love is Unboxing Ipoh’s Tastiest Famous Salt Baked Chicken Next Day.
We just don’t cook or eat out the day after our Ipoh Trip. This is when we unbox Ipoh’s famous delicacies for a great lunch in. We love the taste of their salt baked chicken.
What Is A Salt Baked Chicken?
Ipoh’s most famous Salt Baked Chicken is marinated with Chinese herbs, ginger, and rice wine. It is double wrapped in paper and baked with salt.
Where to find a Salt Baked Chicken in Ipoh?
There are numerous top shops in Ipoh offering the best-salted chicken the city has for visitors. It’s easy to be confused as new shops are aplenty. If you visit Ipoh on weekends and public holidays you may not be lucky enough to walk in and buy. We overheard other customers buying anything from five to 10 boxes! So it is better to call ahead and order your birds. (Er… that sounds wrong again! LOL)
How Long Do I Have to Wait?
The shops are well staffed and have lots of Salt Baked Chickens ready for purchase. Waiting in the queue is no more than 5 – 10 mins tops on packed days. When we went it was about one minute from the moment we got out of our car, placed our order, paid and collected our birds!
Why Did SmartDory Order an Ugly Chicken?
Trust me; I know an “ugly” chicken when I see one. For 30 years Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken makes SUPER tasty and delicious birds that are fragrant. Alas, I can’t take a better-looking photo than this!
The Taste Test!
The instruction on the box says this. To serve the salted chicken hot, steam for 5 minutes with the wrapped paper.
This proves reading the instruction pays! After the unboxing, we decided to take the chicken out. We let it sit at room temperature before steaming.
The Chicken is delicious but darn salty. Wedged in the thigh folds, there are slices of Dong Quai or Tang Kuei inside. Tang Kuei is a powerful herb for women known as the Female ginseng plant.
According to Wikipedia, Angelica Sinensis is a herb from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. Angelica Sinensis grows in cool high altitude mountains in China, Japan, and Korea.
There weren’t any ginseng, wolfberries or ginger slices inside. It is fragrant with rice wine. The meat is very sweet and tender. The best way to eat it is to use your hands. The tender meat falls off the bone easily.
The chicken is about 1.2kg, not a big portion but more than enough for three small eaters. In case you can’t finish the chicken, read this for more recipes.
The Salt Baked Chicken sold here is not for dining in. Basically, it is a take away salted chicken fast-food outlet. The shop sells, cooked salty herbal chicken in boxes. You can opt to buy frozen cooked chicken or the freshly baked ones. This is a famous takeaway food gift from Ipoh.
You can buy the boxed Salt Baked Chicken freshly baked, or frozen. This frozen chicken is ideal to bring home to share with family and friends.
Bear in mind, the chicken is really salty! This makes it delicious but be ready to have a few drinks of water after you eat it!
