Urban Spice Cafe Trail In George Town Heritage Enclave

Urban Spice Cafe Trail In George Town Heritage Enclave is located directly opposite the Armenian Park. It’s interior is cool, comfy and calming with simple lines.

At the rear, there is an air-well and with a grille backdoor, there is ample circulation, nice and airy unlike the stuffy crowded noisy cafes stuck in hotspot without fresh air!

I was very happy to find that the little corner library yielded two tomes of Pak Samad’s translated poems.  For my Saturday afternoon “always-chill-out-in-the-café” I found another hideaway.

The Café

We order several dishes that sounded interesting. The coffee is nice, do check with the barista on how strong you like your coffee and she will make the recommendations.

The service is good with friendly waiters and waitress who are smiling and polite.

Top points for hot food served in a very short time.

There’s Always Time For Burgers

The lively Lamb Burger is served topped with tomato and lettuce and mayo. The burger patty is well seasoned and studded with fragrant herbs and spices. This is a first lamb burger and the taste is not at all gamey by beautiful.

Pulled Beef Burger tasted Asian with the slow cooked beef cooked tender and the meat pulled to shreds. A great twist is the slice of beetroot with the meat.

Pasta & Crab

Angel hair pasta in white tom yam was refreshing and fragrant as this hot and sour soup is addictive.

Chef’s decision of not going for the traditional red version and using pasta has paid off.

When it comes to fried bread, my personal preference would be for a crispy bread triangle topped with fresh crabmeat, prawn and cilantro mix spread on top. Or a crispily fried bread triangle topped with fresh crabmeat and roasted aubergine dip.

Roast Chicken

Urban Spice Café’s Nyonya dish of soft egg coated fried bread stuffed with fresh crabmeat, the minced chicken tasted eggy instead of seafood.

The roast chicken is quite a hit. The dry spice rub is delicious.

Café Style Street Food

Surprisingly the café does two local dishes really well. The Penang Char Koay Teow is without lard but cooked with ducks eggs is creamy and flavorful. It tastes almost like the real McCoy.

I like the Mee Mamak with has plenty of cuttlefish and the punch from the sweet spicy gravy. I would highly recommend these two dishes for those who are keen to have hawker food in a good clean air condition comfort.

Portion size is good. It’s good for sharing. Considering Penang Char Koay Teow and  Mee Sotong Mamak cost at least RM7 at local food courts, the café prices are mid-range in comparison to a hotel coffee house. Urban Spice Café is definitely worth a return visit or two as the owners are looking to expand their menu.

Bet you didn’t know another secret. The Armenian Park was once a thriving flea market before its transformation! Did You Know Once There Were Two Flea Markets In Penang?
