A pleasant stay sums up my experience of a weekend staycation in Ipoh hosted by Ritz Garden Hotel.
I got to drink in the charms of quaint buildings and kopitiams and found many new favourite eateries. Walking around the Old Quarters and checking out its restored heritage building and chilling out in the local cafes was a blast.
Penang’s heritage zone is concentrated in and around Armenian Street. Ipoh’s Concubine Lane and surrounding area are a great boon for shops and businesses.
For leisure and business travellers, the Ritz Garden Hotel located in the heart of Ipoh city is a great choice. I could walk to the commercial area and tourist spots easily. The location between Old and New Town is perfect.
Best of all the hotel is a mere 5 minute walk to all the famous MUST EAT Ipoh food; “Nga Choy kai” or “ayam taugeh”, salt baked chicken and biscuit shops. I always buy the coconut candy whenever I’m in Ipoh. These are fat and taste of santan!
Just around the hotel is Woong Kok soya bean curd stall which has silky soft “tau foo fa” and creamy soya bean milk! The shop opens between 1pm-6pm
Walking around, going out in a taxi and sometimes Ipohan friends took time to bring me to eat their ultimate favourite food. That’s was the best way to visit! The pure joy of a MAKAN TRIP!
I realised that it’s not so far after all to go around in Ipoh. Parking maybe a little bit difficult over the long weekends but generally if you’re willing to walk a little, it’s not so inconvenient.
Going around to eat and shop is marvellous.
I tried Ipoh’s favourite food especially those frequented by locals. The taste is top notch. Ipohan have refined taste buds and all the food taste good to this Penangite.
I was amazed to find out that the Ritz Garden Hotel was built in a former office building. The owners managed to design to integrate the old building and the new extension. The hotel building is an integral part of Jalan Yang Kalsom / Jalan Hussein history.
The location is good as the hotel is close to some famous eateries within walking distance.
My stay in the Ritz Garden Hotel is cosy, comfortable and convenient. I stayed in a family room which has a King bed and another single bed. There are different categories available at their listing.
The room is air – conditioned, spacious, clean and comes with a flat TV, mini fridge, kettle and phone.
The bed is comfy, nice with fresh smelling clean sheets and pillows.
I was curled up in my room between snoozing and surfing the internet. There is a free WIFI connection to all the rooms and hotel area.
There’s a sitting bath, a shower area separated with a glass wall, good strong water pressure although the shower head looks quite small. There’s a hairdryer and a clothes line which is great convenience for a small hotel.
Ritz Recipe located at the Lobby level, offers 24 hours dining with reasonably priced menus ranging from Asian to Western choices. The café serves a decent meal but the small dining area can get a little full during breakfast.
On the new wing there is a KTV, Thai massage centre, snooker and cigar bar, adult pool, gym and a cinema.
The owners managed to put in a decent sized swimming pool in the interconnected Garden Wing. On my next trip, I’m definitely bringing along my swim suit for a dip in the cool water.
The Thai massage/spa centre within the hotel premises has experienced masseurs to iron out the knots in your shoulder and back.
The hotel connects to a Chinese restaurant name “East Come Restaurant”. This restaurant is popular with local business community during lunch offering delicious Chinese food at reasonable price. I was told that you could request for food to be cooked with minimal salt and oil.
There are set menus for both dinner and lunch during the weekdays. The restaurant is open from 11am-2.20pm (lunch) and 5.30pm-10pm (dinner) 7 days a week.
In the evenings, Euro House, a restaurant & bar is very popular as a chill out place. There is ample cosy corners to hang out and a long bar for socialising with your favourite drink. Opening hours are 3pm – 1am
The Cool Lounge is the hotel’s only outlet offering alcoholic drinks. Great for unwinding and a chill out over an ice cool beer and the latest sports update on LCD screen. Opening hours are 3pm – 2am
Review: Overall my experience is a nice hotel with good facilities. There is a 24 – hours convenience store and a few banks and along the road and few restaurants away.
