Economy Rice Lunch | Good Corner Kopitiam Penang
Good Corner Kopitiam is a popular kopitiam in the Island Park, one of the earliest suburbs of George Town built around the Holy Spirit Cathedral. The Catholic Church was developed with the Guan Joo Seng Estate (now known as Taman Besi) in the 1960s.
GOOD FOOD IN THE SUBURBS
The kopitiam has a good location at a corner lot of a row of shophouses near the “Japanese Garden” park. This is the Dewan Komuniti JKKK Island Park.
Most of the patrons live in the vicinity and drop by for their daily meals here. The economy rice stall run by Jeffrey Tay is popular with the locals.
NO FRILLS GOOD FOOD
According to Jeffrey, there are about 40 dishes cooked every Monday. On other days, there are slightly lesser.
His economy rice stall is a no-frills type. The cooked dishes are laid out on a stainless steel stall front and two foldaway tables. The stainless steel trays of food are arranged like a mosaic. The food is nice, tasty and not oily. There is no aftertaste of MSG and it is not too salty.
GREAT FOR TIFFIN CARRIER SQUADS
Most customers will come ready with their tiffin carriers to “ta pau”. There are several pork dishes, fish, curries, chicken, vegetables, tofu and egg dishes.
When I arrived there was only two signature catfish fish head curry (Ikan Keli) left. Jeffery displays catfish heads upside down. It took more than a few minutes before I realized what these were.
Business is brisk and most dishes are sold out by mid-day.
