Butterfly Lovers Chance Meeting | penangpac

One day I visited a friend and noticed that she put up mini colourful plastic butterflies on sticks into her potted plants as decorations which were very pretty.

“Do you know,” she asked lovingly. Her eyes were moist and glistening.

“The meaning of Butterfly Lovers?”

I had no idea of the Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers that mirrored her life.

The story is like this.

BUTTERFLY LOVERS

Set in the Eastern Jin dynasty (265-420 AD) a pair of lovers celebrated the doomed love between Liang Shanbo (梁山伯) and Zhu Yingtai (祝英台).

THE CHANCE MEETING

During her journey, she meets Liang Shanbo, a scholar and was attracted to each other and became firm friends.

They studied together for the next three years and Yingtai gradually falls in love with the bookworm Shanbo who failed to notice the feminine characteristics exhibited by his classmate.

One day, Zhu receives a letter from her father, asking her to return home as soon as possible.

At the day of their parting Yingtai suggests betrothing her sister to Shanbo. The “sister” Is actually Yingtai herself.

The lovers met with Yingtai  dressed as a maiden. Shanbo was so pleased to see his companion again.

The joy of their reunion is short-lived as Yingtai’s parents have arranged for her marriage to a wealthy man, Ma Wencai.

THE ARRANGED MARRIAGE

Shanbo is heartbroken to hear the news and pined desperately for Yingtai until his health gradually deteriorates and he is critically ill.

Sadly he dies in office later as a county magistrate.

On the day of Yingtai’s arranged marriage, strong winds blew. Shanbo’s s grave lies along the journey.

A distraught Yingtai leaves the procession to pay her respects at Shanbo’s grave.

Bitter with despair Yingtai begs for the grave to open up.  With a clap of thunder, the grave suddenly opens up and Yingtai throws herself in to join Shanbo forever.

Their spirits turn into a pair of butterflies, emerge from the grave, fly away together and are never to be separated again.
