Longest You Tiao (Chinese Cruller) Paya Terubong Penang
The Chinese doughnut stick (Youtiao) is one of the best-loved comforting breakfast staples.
What is a You Tiao?
You Tiao (油条) is also known as Chinese fried churros, Chinese cruller, Chinese oil stick, and Chinese doughnut.
This snack is a light, airy and pleasantly chewy long strip of delicious fried dough. Even for first timers, the golden-brown Colour of the breadsticks is appealing.
When you bite into the You Tiao you will find the light crunchy taste very appetizing. The texture is crispy on the outside, and soft, slightly chewy inside which looks like a honeycomb.
In the Cantonese dialect, yàuhjagwái (油炸鬼), which literally translates to “oil-fried-devil” (or ghost)? When I was young, we used to laugh endlessly whenever mom buys this back for our breakfast.
Jokes aside the You Tiao don’t really need much introduction. I find it irresistible when it’s served hot.
It is so popular that McD once sold it for breakfast as Cakoi.
You Tiao is made like bread
The main ingredients are flour and baking soda. After the sticky dough is mixed, it is rested overnight. The next day, it is rolling out and cut into strips.
The long dough strip is typically made in a pair and stretched before frying.
When the You Tiao is cooked it turns a beautiful shade of golden brown.
There are Many Ways to enjoy a You Tiao for breakfast
There are many ways to savor this simple hot snack as it goes well with many Chinese dishes.
Some like to eat it as an ingredient or garnish. It goes extremely well when paired with plain porridge. You can even dunk it into smooth almond tea, soya bean milk. Most of us enjoy dipping it in hot Bak-kut-the soup.
Bak-kut-teh which is a pork dish cooked in herbal broth popularly served in Malaysia and Singapore.
I love the You Tiao best dunk in black Kopi O.
How many calories are in a You Tiao?
If you’re on a diet, you might want to give this a miss. As the You Tiao is a dough fritter fried in oil it contains a high amount of sodium.
A pair of You Tiao has about 192 calories! If you’re watching your daily intake of carbs intake you may want to take only ½ a serve.
Best dunked in black kopi-O, Longest You Tiao (Chinese Cruller) is found in Paya Terubong, Penang.
Shortest You Tiao
Pa Thong Ko is Thai-Style Chinese Crullers (ปาท่องโก๋). This You Tiao is localized into these smaller, fried until thoroughly crispy. I find these mini-sized You Tiao and slightly sweeter.
The Thai people like to eat these mini doughnut versions with sweetened condensed milk, coffee, or dipping custard, Sangkhaya (สังขยา). They are also served with Chinese congee, jok (โจ๊ก).
This is sometimes eaten as an accompaniment to Chinese-style soybean curd in warm ginger syrup (เต้าฮวยน้ำขิง).
XXL Length You Tiao
I was amazed to find this supersized XXL Length You Tiao in Taiwan. I had a hard time trying to finish a pair. It’s like eating 2 pairs of You Tiao at one go! It tasted delicious in the homemade mildly sweet soya milk.
You Tiao are very light, not oily, delightfully crispy and addictive.
I read about the Indonesia version called Cakwe which is thinly sliced and eaten with Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge).
I’m more interested to try the local version dipping Cakwe in a chili vinaigrette or peanut/Saturday sauce. I’ll update the site after my Jakarta trip.
Longest You Tiao in Penang
In Malaysia, these Chinese crullers are about 12” long.
The longest You Tiao (Chinese Cruller) is found in Paya Terubong, Penang. At Te Chang You Tiao Wang Enterprise the outlet makes it about 15” long.
The same recipe is the same. To make this longer, the outlet has a large rectangular shaped pan for frying the extra-long length.
I like the version at Te Chang You Tiao Wang Enterprise.
The variation is a croissant like a snack with fillings of tuna, coleslaw, and even meat floss.
I find that diehard fans will devour this You Tiao in its original form; right off the fire!
